Pronunciation dictionary: teach the AI voice your names

AI voices often misread names and abbreviations. The Pronunciation dictionary lets you set how a word is read, for example “R&D” read as “R and D”. Only the voice changes; the on-screen text and captions stay exactly as written.

When to use it

  • A proper name keeps being mispronounced (a place, a person, a brand).
  • An abbreviation should be read as the full phrase (WHO ⇒ World Health Organization).
  • A word can be read several ways and you want one fixed way.

Note: A rule only changes the voice. The text on screen and the captions stay as written.

Add a rule in Setup

Open Setup, and under Content choose Pronunciation. Your rules apply to all your new videos.

The Setup screen: Pronunciation under Content, marked New and outlined in yellow
Setup › Content › Pronunciation (yellow outline).

Steps

  1. In “Written”, type the word that gets misread, for example R&D.
  2. In “Read as”, type how it should be read, for example R and D. Up to 60 characters and 8 words.
  3. Tap Add. The rule appears in the list below.
  4. Tap ▶ next to a rule to hear the AI voice read it.
  5. To change or remove a rule, tap the pencil or the bin.
The Pronunciation page with numbered steps 1 to 5: the Written field, the Read as field, the Add button, and the listen and edit buttons of a rule
The numbers on the image match the steps above. The bin at the end of each row deletes the rule.

Fix a word in the Review step

Reviewing a script and spot a word that will be misread? You do not need to go back to Setup.

  1. In Voiceover, select the word inside the sentence.
  2. Tap the “Fix how … is read” button that appears, then type how it should be read in “Read as”.
  3. Tap Listen to check it.
  4. Tap Save to dictionary.
  5. Tap Approve & render. The rule you just saved applies to this video, and to all your new videos after it.
The Review step with numbered steps 1 to 4: the selected word in the Voiceover, the Read as field, the Listen button and the Save to dictionary button
Numbers 1 to 4 on the image match the first four steps; step 5 is the Approve & render button.

How rules work

  • Whole words only: a rule for “R&D” does not change the reading of a longer word that merely contains it.
  • Longer matches win: with both “R&D” and “R&D Labs”, the longer phrase is used.
  • Upper and lower case are treated the same by default. Turn on “Match upper/lower case” to tell them apart.
  • Each account can keep up to 100 rules, on every plan including Free. Listening is limited per day.
  • The characters [ ] < > { } cannot be used in “Read as”.

How many rules can I add?

Up to 100 rules per account, on every plan.
